About this event
Description: This talk will focus on the why and how of dam removal. More than 2,300 dams been removed in the United States. Removing a dam eliminates the financial and legal burden on the owner, increases public safety, restores river ecosystems, and can reduce flood risk both upstream and downstream of the dam. With these benefits in mind, New York State DEC is advancing several initiatives to improve the rate and regulatory efficiency of dam removal projects. One important way the State is supporting dam removal is by providing funding streams that can cover all or part of a dam removal project. Using real-world examples from across New York State, this talk will demonstrate how dam removal benefits New Yorkers, reduces flood risk, and provide an overview of funding opportunities.
